Dry Cow Therapy

Drying Off

Published on Tuesday, May 09, 2017

It can be very tempting to reduce dry cow therapy (DCT) due to financial restraints or to minimise the use of antibiotics in food-producing animals, however it is also important to treat chronic mastitis cases and performing DCT now will minimise the amount of antibiotics needed to treat mastitis in early lactation. Herds where no DCT has been used will experience higher number of cases during the dry periods and add to the risk cows detected in the colostrum mob - risking grading when the cows go into the vat.

Financial savings from not using DCT are outweighed by the increased use of intramamary and injectable mastitis treatments.
