NAIT timeframes extended for farmers affected by heavy rain and flooding in the North Island

NAIT timeframes extended for farmers affected by heavy rain and flooding in the North Island

Update from OSPRI - Monday 6th March 2023

We have extended the timeframes for updating NAIT to help ease some of the pressure on farmers and other People in Charge of Animals (PICAs) in the areas mentioned below:

  • Northland Region
  • Auckland Region
  • Tairāwhiti Region
  • Hawke’s Bay Region
  • Tararua District
  • Thames-Coromandel District

You now have the following timeframes to provide the following NAIT information.

PICA registration

Register as a PICA by 7 April 2023.

Animal movements

Declare animal movements by 7 April 2023.

Due to the importance of animal traceability and biosecurity, we can’t provide an exemption from tagging and registering animals before moving them, but we hope to give people some breathing room by extending these timeframes.

Untagged animals

Animals that arrive untagged must be tagged and registered by 7 April 2023.

Where possible, you should check if any NAIT tags have been lost or misplaced in the flooding.

Dead and missing animals

Declare animal deaths and losses by 7 April 2023.

Movement Control Areas

Animals can move out of the affected MCA area without premovement testing, as immediate animal welfare concerns take precedent over TB movement requirements. To manage the TB risk OSPRI will issue a permit to move without pre movement testing - please call 0800 482 463 to arrange a permit to provide details of the movement (number of stock and destination).

In the event a farmer does not have the ability to communicate with OSPRI prior to the movement occurring the permit will be issued retrospectively. This will require the farmer to call OSPRI on 0800 482 463 as soon as practical. OSPRI will assess the timing and testing requirements and follow up with farmers involved at the appropriate time.
